Las Vegas Sands Corp. to launch online casino in Q2

Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS) plans to launch its own online casino in the second quarter of this year, pending regulatory approval. The multi-billion dollar company, which owns The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas and operates casinos in Macau and Singapore, is looking to tap into the $40 billion global online gaming market.

"While we continue to work through the regulatory process in the United States, we are moving ahead with our plans for a globally compliant online casino that can be accessed by players around the world," said LVS CEO Sheldon Adelson. "This is an important growth opportunity for our company."

The move comes as no surprise, as Adelson has been an outspoken opponent of online gambling in the US, arguing that it could lead to increased crime and problem gambling. But with casinos now legal in a number of states, including New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware, LVS is looking to offshore markets for growth.

The company said it will partner with UK-based GIG (Global Gaming), which operates a number of regulated online casinos, to offer its portfolio of games, including slots, table games and poker.

LVS shares were down slightly in early trading on Wednesday but have gained more than 30% over the past 12 months.
